8th Gryffindor note [voice] / [action]

It seems as though people come and go a lot here. I noticed it a while back, but you don't think the people doing the going will be those you're close to or know well until... they disappear, too. It's too much to hope that things will remain relatively constant, isn't it?

Ron's gone... isn't he?

[Hermione's going to be sitting out in the middle of the ground with a bunch of mats and blankets. She's got a small fire going on a pile of rocks in front of her. It looks like it shouldn't be possible, but there's definitely a fire there. And it makes the air around it warm. So she's pretty toasty now. If you want to say hello, you can be toasty warm, too, as long as you sit down.]

((OOC: replies will likely be slow still, but I'm definitely more here than I have been |D;))

I can't imagine being alone or wanting to, whether or not it hurts to lose someone.
knightofratatosk: (I don't like this)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
But it... it hurts more to lose someone than it would if you never had them in the first place.

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but it might hurt worse to not feel loved and valued in the first place.

Back home, we were fighting a war, where we didn't know who was going to die next, who would be killed. Yet we still made friends and still kept close to each other because our friends were all we had. I wouldn't trade that for anything and feeling pain when you lose someone... that means you're human, you've got enough emotion to care for people...
knightofratatosk: (Unsure)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[This is all hitting very close to home for Emil and it's making him a bit uncomfortable. For one thing, he knows all about what it feels like to not be loved and valued.]

So... being able to care about people, is that what makes someone human?

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[sob, if she knew, he'd be another of her 'projects' really fast.]

Yes, in my experience.
knightofratatosk: (Always by your side)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-01 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But people who aren't human can care about others too. Ric-- someone I know is a half-elf, but he can get angry and sad and happy just like I can. And... he cared about someone.

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean it quite like that. It's an old, out-of-date turn of phrase the Wizarding World likes to use that just means you have emotions, that you're a good kind of person, if you can feel like that.
knightofratatosk: (Huh?)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-02 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The Wizarding World... is that where you come from?

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Well, it's one side of my world, but it's the one I've become more accustomed to.
knightofratatosk: (Oh snap)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-03 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There are two sides of your world too? I thought mine was the only one like that...

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
mhm. The people who don't have magic generally don't know that magic even exists. We're supposed to blend in normally when we interact with them. My parents are Muggles, though, so I can do it easier than most people.
knightofratatosk: (Downcast)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-03 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So then... people who have magic are looked down on in your world.

[He's assuming it works the way it does with half-elves in his world, where some of them try to pass themselves off as human.]

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a little more complicated than that. Our government has us hide ourselves so we don't upset the Muggles and so they don't come to us to fix every little thing that goes wrong. With that protection comes a heavy price. The Ministry has to maintain order in the Wizarding World so that the Muggles never know. It makes things very difficult when Dark Wizards decide to attempt to take over.
knightofratatosk: (I don't get it)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-13 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Hide themselves? Ouch, that definitely smacks of how half-elves are treated.]

Don't you get angry at them for treating you like that?

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-13 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's for our own protection... that and to protect the Muggles from us. They wouldn't... Well, a lot of them don't believe magic exists, so to see it at all would be a huge shock for them. I don't think some of them would take it very well, but witches and wizards can't help being who they are, either.
knightofratatosk: (Downcast)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-13 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
But it isn't fair... it isn't fair for you to have to hide what you are just because some people wouldn't accept you. What good is being accepted if it isn't for who you really are?

[Voice]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-13 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
[She pauses, kind of understanding what you're getting at. But it's also very... different where she's from.]

Because some wizards use their magic to hurt Muggles. Because some Muggles fear us and with Dark Lords springing up all over, who can blame them? Some of our people are more of a danger to them and our magical creatures are also hidden. How would you feel if you never knew dragons existed until one suddenly showed up outside your window?

It's better for us to be left on our own and it's not like we're all alone. We can reveal our true natures to each other and nearly every wizarding family knows all the others, by name or in person.
knightofratatosk: (Sorrow)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-15 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
[He listens to all of this quietly. When next he speaks, his tone is sad.]

Then... maybe humans and half-elves can't ever get along after all.
knightofratatosk: (Sad)

[Voice]

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-15 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's just like you were talking about with muggles and wizards... how one side is afraid of the other because they don't understand them. So if it doesn't work in your world, how could it work in mine either?

[Voice] .... sorry, you're getting Hermione tl;dr >>a

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-15 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because our worlds are likely completely different. Magic isn't what makes a person who they are. One of my friends, someone I've looked up to for ages, is half-giant. Giants aren't... they're feared worse than nearly anything by the Wizarding Community, yet Hagrid is as harmless- er... mostly harmless. He just likes dangerous magical creatures. He has a good heart, though.

[She pauses just long enough to draw breath before continuing.] Several of my yearmates at my wizarding school are descended from Muggle families. Many are half-Muggle and half-wizard. Both of my parents are Muggles. They have no magic to speak of. None of my family does. But I have lots of magic. I'm a witch.

[She pauses again, but it's slightly longer this time and when she speaks again, her voice is soft.]

There's a war going on at home right now. A war between certain dark wizards called Death Eaters and Muggles. They don't believe Muggles should be allowed to exist, nor do they believe that anyone with Muggle parentage can have magic. I'm what they call a 'Mudblood,' which means someone with dirty blood, and we're hunted more than any other group of people in the world.

In spite of that, one of my best friends is a pureblood wizard and the other is a halfblood. Just because you're hunted by some people, doesn't mean others won't accept you for the person inside, not what blood you have.

knightofratatosk: (Right behind you)

[Voice] Oh Hermione XD

[personal profile] knightofratatosk 2009-12-15 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I... [Even thinking about this subject hurts, but it's not something that ever leaves his mind either.] That half-elf I told you about... I'm in love with him. It doesn't matter to me whether he's a half-elf or anything like that, he's one of the most amazing people I've ever met, and I don't care what anyone else thinks about it. Just because he's a half-elf and can use magic... that doesn't mean he's any different than me.

[Voice] |D;b you gotta expect it at some point with her

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-12-15 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
[She understands. Really, she does.]

What else do you need but those feelings? Another of my friends, someone who's older than I am, is a very powerful witch, but she's a half-blood. Her mother is a pureblood, descended from very carefully chosen matches so that the entire line is pure... up until her marriage. She married a Muggle-born wizard and her entire family disowned her. I don't think she's seen them since. But what matters is that she married him because she loved him, not because her family expected it of her.
knightofratatosk: (I don't get it)

What happened to her after that? Did people treat her badly too?
