1st Gryffindor Note - [Text, then audio post]

[Have a really, REALLY shaky handwriting, as though whoever's writing this hurts quite a bit or is exceptionally scared... or hey, why not both. And there's an ink splotch on the top.]

.../looks like a diary. I can't tell.

[Another ink blot, but this one's apparently intentional.]

It's not like what Harry described Riddle's diary as being. I don't suppose it responds to voice commands. My hand hurts too much to write.

[Oh hey, it's swapped to voice here. Have a thumping sound and a soft 'oof.' She's fallen off the bed. And her voice next is really soft, as though she's not aware the thing is recording.]

My handbag. Bellatrix's wand. They're -

The shops here sometimes have stuff from back home. Clothes, some weapons, things like that. But if that's no good, there are some people with magic in these parts. Maybe they can put something together? I dunno much about wands, really.

I think I'll look around as soon as I can. Even if I have to look up wandlore myself, it'll be good knowledge to have. [And hey, she might learn more about the Elder Wand while she's at it.]

I live with a guy who might be able to help. He's from my world, sure--so no big wandishness, there. But he spent his whole life studying the occult. [She shrugs.] It's a possible lead, at least.

I know a little bit about wandlore and if I can find a book on it in the library, or even one of my own, I'm sure we can come up with something. It's better than sitting here doing nothing the entire time.

[She points at the side that she's been holding this entire time.] Oh, believe me. Things crop up, things get busy. Uncomfortably so.

[She glances at it worriedly.] I wish I could help, but without my wand or even my handbag, I can't really do anything other than bandage.

[Or she would have done something about her own internal bruising.]

Oh, no biggie. I've had it looked at by a Doctor. Which, if you ever meet a man who looks like he's always grumbling and sorta looks like he's from the future? Don't tell you saw me up and around. He might actually kill me for breaking bed-rest. [But she flashes a quick smile at the end, to show that she's joking. Hopefully.]

[Hermione offers a smirk and a chuckle at that.] I won't. He sounds like Madam Pomfrey and we avoided upsetting her as much as possible.

You're welcome to rest here if you want, but I'll probably just be doing a lot of reading.

In the journal thing? Yeah, there's certainly a lot to read in there. And listen to. Sometimes even watch.

It's good information, too. [Her glance strays to where hers is lying.] Do the pictures move or is it like Muggle video recordings?

Muggle? [She tilts her head. That sounds sorta like something...but she can't quite bring it to the front of her mind.]

I think it's some sort of...enchantment. Not technology, or anything.

Ah, sorry. Non-magical people.

[She's obviously taking all the information in and processing it. Hermione thinks a lot.]

Yet another thing I will have to figure out. [But she's smiling and definitely not upset about this.]

Non-magical people? So...do you mean people who can't do magic or people who have nothing magical about them?

[She seems to find the question very relevant.]

Well, they're kind of the same thing back home.

Okay, so what about people who have certain...abilities, but not of the casting-spells kind?

Like what? All we've got are spells and potion-making and that sort of thing. [Curiosity piqued? Check.]

[She's picking at the knees of her jeans. This is Buffy trying to be subtle. It doesn't work well.] Y'know--what about things like supernatural speed or strength or...or dreams that come true? Or destinies? What are those people?

[Hermione's looking serious, but not in a way that says she's afraid or disliking of the subject matter.]

I'm not sure. We don't have any of that without spell power. Well, we do have Divination as a branch of magic, but it's dull and rather worthless, so I don't think it quite counts. Everything else needs a spell for it to work back home. So I suppose what you've mentioned would fall under the category of magic where I'm from.

So what if it was started by a spell? But not by the person who is all fast and strong. By like, other people. A long time ago. And the spell that they cast lasted such a long time. Like, a really long time. Say, through generations?

Well the spell that was cast was magic, so the effect is magical and even if it's not exactly something your ancestors had by birth, you were still born with it. I would still consider that person magical, regardless of how they came about the magic.

It's kind of like my own heritage in a way. I'm Muggle-born, which means my parents don't have any magic in their blood and nowhere on our family tree was there magic until I was born.

Do you ever miss the chance to be an ordinary girl?

To me, magic is ordinary now. Being Muggle-born, I've always lived in both worlds, so either is 'normal.' I definitely prefer being able to use magic, though. It's saved my life more times than I care to count.

[And also caused immeasurable pain, as is evident in her expression now.]

I guess it helps that you guys have the whole...society thing, right? Rather than being on your own.

A lot of people believe only those who are pure-blood wizards deserve to live in my world. Mudbloods like me have no place according to them. People like that are the ones I'm fighting against. Even in a society, there's good and bad.

[She looks down as she remembers the conversation she'd had with Scrimgeour before she, Ron, and Harry left school months ago.]

Somebody once asked me if I wanted to work in in the Ministry of Magic, helping the wizarding government. I told him no, that I actually wanted to do some good in the world.

[And she looks back up with a kind of sorrowful smile.] Even governments meant to help can turn corrupt.

Sometimes, a different kind of justice can be much, much more just. The underground kind.
