As I already spend all of my free time in the library, I'd like to extend the offer to tutor anyone who goes to school and would like the extra help. It's no trouble at all to me and I actually enjoy it. I'm used to doing that sort of thing back home. All you need to do is tell me your name and if you'd like to do it over the journals or in person and I'll see about setting something up. I think tutoring and study groups are good things for young minds such as ours and it's a good way to pass the time that would otherwise be spent being bored or some such.

My name, for those who still don't know me, is Hermione Granger, and if you need me at all, I will likely be in the library.

Oh, you know. Been around. How'd you feel about your very first experiment from Hell?

It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, but... [It couldn't have come at a worse time.] I lived through it.

How did you fare with this one? I hope it didn't do anything horrible to you.

I was one of the fortunate--the girl they swapped me with was a real darling type. So the over-all verdict? Not so bad. I've seen worse, while here.

I was swapped with Raine, the schoolteacher, so it wasn't bad for me, either, especially when compared to some of the other events I've heard about.

Raine? She's definitely one of the nice folks around here. Glad to learn it wasn't like...some sort of animal you ended up changing with.

She has been extremely helpful while I've been here. It was nice to know the person with my wand wasn't going to break it.

...That would have been exceedingly awkward.

No. It doesn't quite work that way. But I did manage to find it right before the experiment, so at least I know it's okay now.

How does it work?

[SO CURIOUS.]

They're very difficult to make and require specific cores and wood types. Each wand is different and will favour a different person. You could attempt to make a wand for someone, but there's no guarantee that wand will perform its best for that person. It's best to make a wand and then let it choose the person it wishes to align itself with.

So...they're like baby ducks.

Ducklings. Y'know, like when they hatch and they think someone's their mom even when it's not because they've--][she forgets the word]--because they've somethinged. Are wands like that?

[Hermione supplies the word.] It's like that to an extent. Wands choose a person and can be given to other people if the original carrier dies or if the wandowner allows their wand to be handed over. If the wand decides not to give its alliance, it will be quite difficult to get it to do anything, even the most basic spells.

So...not really anything like a baby duck, then?

[Disappointed? A bit.]

I guess some of them are cute like baby ducks.

Oh no--don't get me wrong. I'm totally interested. Just--should warn you? Magic isn't really my typical field. Well, not in the sense that you'd normally use.
