3rd Gryffindor Note - [voice]

[She sounds tired, interested in what she's doing, but very weary. Every so often, there's the rustle of a page, as though she's reading something. Knowing Hermione, she's in the library.]

These books are fascinating. I almost feel as though I'm back in my first school, studying for a test or something. Sciences, math, literature. Makes me miss the library at Hogwarts, not counting the librarian.

I wonder how everyone's doing...

[She sighs heavily. There's the scraping of a chair and then a thump later on, as though she's just set another book on the table.]

At least I have time to read now. Are there any other bookworms out here?

...[He seems to understand that as well, and he's almost tempted to take that as an offer before his pride jumps in. No. He could handle this. He can't hold her gaze for very long before his eyes move downcast.] I guess I should be glad I'm still alive six months later then.

[She glances away again, lips curving upwards.] At least you know a little of what happens to you now, though I'm sorry none of it is very happy.

I didn't really expect it to be happy. I'd almost say I deserved it, but I don't think that's it.

[She gives him a look that says she doesn't think so, either, but says nothing for now.]

[Silence is uncomfortable.] You believe in fate, don't you, Granger?

I suppose... why do you ask?

Why do you think I'm asking?

To see if I believe we have a place in this world. [By 'we' she means you, Draco.]

Something like that, I guess. So, do you?

Yes. In that case and by that meaning, yes I do.

In that case, do you also believe that we're forced to play into the roles fate gave us? Or is it possible to swap roles over the course of time?

[She considers that for a moment.] I believe life is what you make of it. If you see fit to swap sides, then I don't think there's anything that can stop you. [She thinks she sees what you're getting at here.]

[He knows Hermione's not an idiot, he pretty much expects her to pick up on it right off the bat. He's not ready to openly admit what he's thinking though so he'll just nod in response] Fair enough. I'll consider that.

[She offers him a calm smile at that.] I'm glad that answered your question.

As much as I hate to admit it, you are fairly brilliant. [And perhaps there's a phantom of a smile there. He's trying at least.]

[Did he just admit she's- ... Must not ruin this... must not ruin this. She tries to give him a flattered smile and not one of her usual beaming rays that she'd give Harry or Ron for the compliment, nor what she'd give to a teacher.] Thank you. [And she sounds like she means it.]

[He's not quite sure what to make of that smile but it can't really be a bad thing, right?] Sure. But let's just keep that between you and me, shall we?

[Not at all.] Of course. [She's not really sure what else to say or do, so she moves her legs under her again, kinda like she wants to get up...]

...Can I ask you something?

Doesn't asking permission count as asking me something? [But he does turn his attention on her to wait for her to ask whatever she has in mind]

[Oh touche. But she laughs at that.] Yes, all right. May I ask you a few questions then? [She smiles again and then asks without waiting.]

How did you find your wand?

[He tilts his head and sits up then, withdrawing his wand from his pocket to regard it] It was just lying there wrapped in my clothes, like it was just waiting for me to come get it. [Looks up from his wand then] You still haven't found yours?

[Her face falls visibly then and she lets out a slight sigh, as though she'd been hoping for a different answer.] No, I haven't. I was rather hoping I could find it someplace. You don't think it's... I don't suppose it would matter. Mine couldn't be here after all.

[But it's obvious that she's been hoping it would turn up.]

[...it's pretty clear an idea's just occurred to him then. He pulls his other hand out of the water and gets to his feet then] Come on. [He's not going to say what he's planning yet but he's hoping she trusts him enough to at least follow him back to town. Maybe her wand's in the weapon shop? Or Bellatrix's wand, in this case. A wand. While originally he enjoyed lording over her that he's got his wand and she doesn't, now it's just starting to get a little pathetic.]

[She blinks but quickly stands to follow.] Where are we going?

To look for the wand, what else? [Clearly that look is saying 'I'm being generous, do not push your luck'.]
