loyalotter: (not the surprise I wanted!)

Voice; / Action;

[It's a couple of minutes before she actually says anything, but there are a few doodles on the page. When she does speak, she's very subdued.]

I guess this is the next experiment. It seems to be... a strange one anyway. I wonder who has my body?

...This is Hermione, for those who don't recognise my voice or my face. I don't look like I normally do.

[So the basic turn of events for Hermione: She wakes up rather groggy, eyes not quite as red or scratchy as she thought they'd be. Hello, something's off. She doesn't really notice her body change just yet as she makes her way out of the random room she was in. And a little later notices the body of her best friend... whom she had just fought with not a few days ago and who has been resolutely refusing to speak with her. Can't deal with seeing him yet. Hermione flees the house.

Currently, she (in the body of Raine Sage) is sitting by the lake, with her knees curled up to her chin. Those who know her, even if they've only spoken to her for a minute or less, can EASILY tell that something is very, VERY wrong here. Feel free to talk to her.]

[She keeps watch to be sure Raine's got the grip right and when she does, Hermione brings up the spoon.] The incantation is Wingardium Leviosa. Make the "gar" and the "o" nice and long. [Can you tell she's had to coach someone on this spell in the past?] And the movement is a swish and flick almost in time with the "gar" and "o."

[She demonstrates and has to bite back the feeling of disappointment when nothing happens for her.]

[Raine gives a practice movement of the wand, before turning her concentration towards the towel.]

Wingardium Leviosa. [With the proper wand movement accompanying it, of course, and likely sounding very much like Hermione herself in the process. There is, at least, a soft tone of wonder in her voice at the result, as the object slowly lifts; it's not as if that happens every day.] Goodness, this is fascinating.

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hermione smiles encouragingly. It's so strange to watch herself cast spells. No wonder everyone's usually annoyed with her for getting it right immediately.]

That's really good! If you move your wand around, you can direct the towel to move in the air, but you have to keep concentrating on it. No spell will work with my magic if you don't concentrate enough. That's the key.

Of course. It's only logical, after all. [But she'll be trying that now.]

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really good! [It's kind of cool to watch herself do this kind of thing.] All right, something else. Cheering Charms were third year but they might work all right.

Let's try the Disarming Charm, the Patronus Charm, and then the Shield Charm. Those should help you against most things and then maybe some of the jinxes just so you have things to cast if something should happen. [She's kinda worried about the Patronus Charm as she's always had problems with it and doesn't really want to admit that there's a spell she can't cast perfectly every time. Of course, since it's a great deal mental as well as magical, Raine should have no problem if she can get a memory strong and happy enough.]

The Disarming Charm: ex-pel-ee-AR-mus! If it works, my spoon should fly out of my hand. If not, then it'll just jerk a little.

[She's enjoying this. And don't worry, Hermione, Raine's likely to have difficulty with that Patronus Charm herself. But for now... she lets the cloth fall neatly to the table, and turns her concentration towards the spoon. A different sort of concentration seems required here. Maybe...]

Expelliarmus!

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[So is Hermione. The spoon jerks out of her hand and she grins as it soars toward Raine.] Excellent! That was really good! That one's fairly simple, but will help you when you really need it.

All right, let's try the Patronus Charm. [Time for the one she's nervous about. At least it's the least likely to do any real harm if it backfires.] The incantation is Ex-PEK-toh Pa-TROH-num. If it works, it will conjure a silver guardian in the form of the animal you most resemble. However... this one requires more than just the incantation and wand movement. You have to pick a memory, a very strong and happy memory, and focus on that memory as you cast the spell. Otherwise it won't work.

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-12 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[And Raine catches the spoon with her free hand.] Thank you. It doesn't seem too difficult to figure out, once you apply a certain reasoning to it.

[That one does sound a little more complicated, though. She has plenty of strong memories, but happy? After a few moments of consideration, she decides on one and attempts the cast.] Expecto Patronum!

[Not strong enough. There is a small wisp of silver, but it doesn't form much of anything, or last very long.] ... Hm. Do you think the form would be different for me, or is there one that we're looking for?

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Dang, it didn't work. Well it is a hard spell.] I-... [She falters slightly.] I'm not sure. It might be since your mind is fundamentally different from mine and it's the mind and personality that determines the animal form of your Patronus, or seems to. If it helps, mine's an otter, but I also have trouble with the spell. It's the only one I can't cast consistently.

[There, she's admitted it.]

I just know that your memory has to be very happy. The Patronus itself is made of happiness and light, so it needs you to focus on giving it that.
wise_maiden: (event // don't try me)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-13 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[The problem isn't that it's hard, it's simply... finding the right memory to qualify.] Expecto Patronum!

[The result seems a little stronger, but still nothing that can be defined.] The power of emotions over spells... I wonder how it is, that the incantations were developed, and the thoughts to how to form them given. It seems I'll have to give this one another try.

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hermione understands that all too well.] That was a little better. It's a difficult spell at best; most adult wizards can't conjure a fully corporeal Patronus. Harry learned in our third year because of the dementors, creatures with the power to suck the happiness from everything and everyone near them. And then he taught me and a few other people in fifth year. Many of them couldn't do it, either.

[At the question, she just shakes her head and names off a few possibilities, but as she has no firm proof and history has a habit of covering things up, she doesn't really know for sure.]
wise_maiden: (event // don't try me)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-13 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering what's required, it's understandable that people would have difficulty with it. [She's a little frustrated that it's being difficult for her, but she tries to focus on finding another memory instead.]

Those are all interesting possibilities, however. It's a shame that there's no real way in proving them.

[She thinks she's found something. It doesn't feel like purely a happy memory, but it is a strong one, so perhaps it will have to do.] Expecto Patronum!

[Finally, something more corporeal appears, though it takes a little while before settling on a form]

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hermione understands completely.] It's still frustrating not to be able to get it easily. When a dementor is near, it's even harder. [It's a bit obvious that she really hates that fact.]

That's really nice. I'm glad you managed it, though it's different from mine, so I guess the spell really is tied to the mind more than the magical essence.
wise_maiden: (event // say that to my face)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-13 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's reliant on something other than concentration or application. It's... imprecise. It seems more of a power you'd have to train yourself to use, especially when under pressure, which is when it would be needed most.

[She's watching the formless mist dissipate though, though, and closes her eyes, takes a steady breath, and tries again.]

Expecto Patronum!

[There we go. The form seems to be that of a cat, small, nimble, and cautious, yet with that air of curiosity. It lands neatly on it's feet on the table in front of them, before pacing the length back and forth.]

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-15 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[She smiles at the sight of the cat and nods.] It's much harder when there's a dementor around, because not only are you forcing your happiness into the spell, but you're doing it while the dementor is sucking all your happiness away and replacing it with sadness and despair. It's a very complex spell. Harry's very strong to have perfected it in third year. He's the one who taught me.
wise_maiden: (event // there have been worse things)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-15 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[She watches the cat thoughtfully.] He seems like someone who's had to overcome quite a few things. It would only make sense that he'd be able to use that power to his advantage.

With determination, I'm certain you will be able to overcome your difficulties with it. It's simply on a different level of processing.

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nods thoughtfully and sighs a little bit.] It's still frustrating. [Have a sheepish smile, though.]

So, now that you've got the Patronus, do you want to have another go at it or move on to the Shield Charm? This one should be a little easier. It's all technique.
wise_maiden: (event // there have been worse things)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-17 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Lets try some others. I can always attempt the Patronus again later.

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
All right. [She moves to pick up the spoon she'd lost during the Disarming Charm practice and begins with the flourish for the next project.]

This is the Shield Charm. Its incantation is pro-TAY-go and if successful, it will cause a magical barrier to appear in front of you. It can deflect most minor or mid-level curses, jinxes, and hexes.
wise_maiden: (event // don't try me)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-17 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I see. [It reminds her of another form of spell that she uses. She watches the instruction, and concentrates, mimicking the movements and the incantation] Protego!

[And yet another flawless spell. Technical ones are so much better.]

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[she smiles in return, glad to see that the rest of them are working quite nicely.]

Those are the basic, or well not basic, but more commonly-used defensive spells. I can teach you a couple of offensive ones, as well, but we might need to move outside to catch a bug or else we won't know if it's worked or not.
wise_maiden: (event // there have been worse things)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-20 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds fine to me. Perhaps I can help you direct a few of my own artes, as well.

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like that. [She smiles and leads the way outside. Well, there are a couple of ants at least. That'll work. She's still got the spoon in her hand for demonstration purposes.]

All right. First is the Impediment Jinx.

Im-ped-ih-MEN-tah!

If successful, it will force your opponent to temporarily slow down or stop whatever they are doing. It's best used when you need to flee.
wise_maiden: (event // there have been worse things)

[action]

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2009-10-22 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like a plan, then. [Following Hermione outside. Still a little odd to be following herself, but it hasn't been too difficult to get used to. She nods at the instruction, and follows as directed, with the wand aimed at the ants-]

Impedimenta!

[Practical spells really are so much better.]

[action]

[identity profile] loyalotter.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[She smiles as the ants start struggling a bit and stop completely.]

Oh and if you ever want to reverse your spell effects, most of them can be undone by Finite Incantatem.

[She thinks for a moment before offering up another spell.]

The Stunning Spell ought to be next. STOO-puh-fye! It will Stun the target and render them unconscious.
